Feb. 28th 2014, the last EMU - Electric Multiple Unit - rolled of line in CNR Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd. were sent off from Changchun to Brazil. 60 EMU trains is about to be operated in Rio de Janeiro before 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.
In order to improve the rail transit network, Rio de Janeiro signed a series contracts with CNR Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd. to import Metro cars.
On 9 November 2009, a contract of supply 114 metro cars for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was signed with Metro Rio . CNR Changchun Railway Vehicle Co., Ltd. started to delivery the first car in the late of 2011. That's the second contract after 120 EMU for Rio de Janeiro on 30 June. The two contracts cost over 300 million US dollars.
The metro car will running on Line 1A of Rio de Janeiro. With type A stainless steel car-body, the train consists of 4M + 2 T. The max. speed is 100 km/h. The truck gauge is 1,600 mm. The seating capacity is 2,310 people.
This project is one part of city infrastructure improvement for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.
