Eight people have been confirmed dead after a rainstorm-triggered flood hit Quanzhou County, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, local authorities said Monday.
As of 11 p.m. Sunday, nine people in Quanzhou had been reported missing and another 34 injured, according to the county's publicity department.
An 80-year-old passenger was exempt from punishment, partly due to her age, after she tossed a handful of coins toward the engine of an aircraft on Tuesday.
The woman, surnamed Qiu, threw nine coins to pray for a safe journey when she was boarding the China Southern Airlines plane at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
Maintenance personnel launched an immediate overhaul of the aircraft and found one coin in the engine, which could have led to its malfunction. The aircraft departed late on Tuesday evening from Shanghai to Guangzhou, five hours behind schedule.

Four police officers from Italy conduct joint patrols with Chinese police officers on the Great Wall in Beijing on Monday. The Italian officers will help to patrol the streets in Beijing and Shanghai from April 24 to May 7.
Eight Chinese police officers will go on patrol in Italy in early June to help their Italian counterparts protect Chinese tourists, a senior police official said on Monday.
