Chief Economist, Bart van Ark, will present recent Conference Board work on productivity, one cornerstone of the empirical research performed by The Conference Board. His presentation will examine the comparative productivity performance of China, other Asian economies and emerging economies in Europe and Latin America. He will explain how productivity underpins and drives economic growth and competitiveness, and identify key trends and business issues related to comparative country growth and competitiveness. His discussion will span unit labor costs, exchange rates, and investment in strategic capital.

The Conference Board is the world’s leading independent business membership and research organization, established nearly 100 years ago in the public interest. The Conference Board conducts economic and business practice research, convenes business and policy leaders, makes forecasts, assesses trends, publishes information and analysis, and brings executives together to learn with and from one another. The mission: to help members and the public anticipate, understand and effectively address the most critical socio-economic issues of our time. The China Center for Economics and Business was established in Beijing in 2006 to improve understanding and engagement in China's economic development, both for multinational companies operating in the China market and for Chinese companies expanding into global markets.

Mr. Bart van Ark is Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of The Conference Board. A Dutch national, he is the first non-U.S. Chief Economist in The Conference Board’s 90-year history. Van Ark is an expert in international comparative studies of economic performance, productivity, and innovation. Van Ark continues to steward The Conference Board’s longstanding research collaboration with the University of Groningen in the Netherlands; a professor there since 2000, he holds the university’s chair in Economic Development, Technological Change and Growth. Van Ark has been extensively published in national and international journals, including the Journal of Economic Perspectives, Economic Policy, the Review of Income and Wealth and The Brookings Papers on Economic Activity. He is a member of the editorial boards of several academic journals and serves on various advisory committees in the areas of productivity and national accounts.
