China's first homemade regional jet, the ARJ21, has started mass production and 30 planes will be delivered to clients by 2012, according to the state-run Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.

There's demand for regional jets due to their fuel efficiency on shorter routes, said a report on the Chinese commercial airplane market released by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China. From 2008 to 2027, Chinese airlines will need to add 2,822 jumbo jets and 993 regional jets to their fleets, it said.
